It’s also one of the most irresistible street foods in India, and you can never get tired of eating it!
What exactly are chicken momos?
Basically, chicken momos are dumpling-like snacks filled with a delicious filling. It is possible to categorize momos according to their filling ingredients, such as vegetarian momos, beef momos, pork momos, chicken momos, cheese momos, mushroom momos, and even sweet momos nowadays. However, the original momo recipe originated in the Tibetan region, where it spread to Nepal, Bhutan, India, and the rest of the world.
Making momos is an art, and every family in the regions we mentioned has a slightly different way of doing it. You can always modify your chicken momos recipe according to your tastes. This means you can deep fry them or tandoor or toss them in a gravy of your choice.
Where did chicken momos originate?
Though its origins aren’t 100% clear, momos probably originated somewhere on the Tibetan plateau around the 14th century. Tibetan trade flourished under areas of autonomy that were left over from the golden era of the Tibetan kingdom. Momos probably reached the Indian subcontinent through Tibetan merchants increasing trade with India and Nepal.
Although beef and pork momos were more popular in Tibet (where most non-vegetarian people consume only meat), chicken momos thrived in Nepal and India (where most non-vegetarian people consume only chicken). People continued to adapt momos to local standards and ingredients as they became more and more popular.

How should I serve the ready-to-eat chicken momos?
Chicken momos are traditionally served with chutney or thukpa soup alongside delicious chutney. There are two main types of chutney: green and red. The colour of the dip is determined mostly by the chillies used for making it. In case you aren’t used to spicy foods, please be cautious when using spices when preparing chutney.
The beauty of momos lies in their versatility, which is why they are served this way in their traditional form. Other Indian Street food snacks such as honey chilli potato, ghugni chaat, and aloo chaat can also be combined with momos.
